The travel website that actually books: what most get wrong

6 min readMedjay Digital

Most travel and hospitality websites are gorgeous. Big cinematic imagery, elegant type, a drone shot of a pool at golden hour. And a surprising number of them barely book a thing.

That’s not a design problem. It’s a plumbing problem. The gap between a site that looks the part and one that actually turns lookers into bookings is almost always what happens behind the pretty pixels.

Beauty is table stakes, not the strategy

Of course a travel brand should look beautiful — you’re selling desire. But beautiful is where you start, not where you win. The moment a visitor decides to act, a dozen small frictions decide whether they follow through or drift away. Get those right and an ordinary-looking site will out-earn a stunning one every time.

Where the bookings leak out

When we audit a travel site that “isn’t converting”, we tend to find the same handful of leaks:

  • The enquiry is an afterthought. A tiny “Contact” link in the footer, a generic form that emails an inbox nobody watches. The path to saying yes should be the easiest thing on the page.
  • Enquiries go nowhere. The form works, but the lead lands in a shared mailbox and gets answered — maybe — two days later. In travel, the fast reply wins the booking.
  • It’s slow on a phone. Your guests are browsing on the sofa, on mobile data. A heavy site that takes five seconds to load has already lost half of them.
  • No trust, no proof. No real photos, no stories, no reassurance about what happens after they pay. Travel is a leap of faith; the site has to hold their hand.
  • Dead ends. Beautiful pages that admire themselves but never gently ask for the next step.
A website that doesn’t convert isn’t a website. It’s an expensive brochure with a nice font.

What a booking-shaped site does differently

The sites that actually earn their keep share a quiet discipline. Every page knows the one action it wants. The enquiry is effortless and always within reach. And — this is the part most people miss — the moment someone reaches out, that enquiry lands somewhere real, with someone ready to reply, fast.

That last point is why we don’t just build websites; we wire them into the system that runs the business. With Site, an enquiry doesn’t vanish into an inbox — it drops straight into your CRM as a live lead, with a notification, ready to become a quote before your competitor has even opened their email.

Pretty and profitable aren’t a trade-off

You don’t have to choose between a site that’s a pleasure to look at and one that fills your pipeline. You just have to treat conversion as part of the craft, not an afterthought bolted on at the end. Design for the eye and the plumbing behind it — that’s a website that books.
